Trent’s Creativity vs Dumfries’ Balance: Who Would Mourinho Pick?

Nurul haque NobelNurul haque NobelJul 28, 2026

here is one big question who would fit Mourinho football better, Denzel Dumfries or Trent Alexander-Arnold?

At first, you might think the answer is obvious. But it really isn’t.

These two players give you completely different things, and the better choice depends on how Mourinho wants to build this Madrid team.

Dumfries would give Mourinho more physical power, direct running and better balance on the right side.

He is not just a player who stays at right-back and defends. He is very dangerous when he attacks space, especially when Madrid win the ball and move forward quickly. He can push high, stretch the opposition defence, make runs behind the full-back and attack the box from the right side.

That can be very useful in Mourinho’s football because Dumfries gives the team a simple attacking option: win the ball, move forward quickly and use his power and runs to hurt the opponent.

He can also help defensively because of his strength, energy and willingness to track back. So even if he does not give you the same quality on the ball as Trent, he can make the overall shape feel more solid.

Then there is Trent, and he gives you a completely different weapon

His passing and crossing are at an all-time level. He can change a game with one pass, find runners from deep and create chances without even getting close to the opposition box.

He can stay wide, move inside into midfield or act almost like an extra playmaker when Madrid have the ball.

And this is where I think people sometimes underestimate Trent in a Mourinho team.

Mourinho is usually linked with defensive football, but his teams have not always been about sitting deep and defending. During his Benfica spell, especially in his early tactical work, there were periods where his teams wanted more control of the ball and used possession to build attacks.

So if Mourinho wants that kind of approach at Madrid, Trent could become one of the key players in his system.

Imagine a back four with Courtois behind Dumfries or Trent, Rüdiger, Huijsen and Carreras.

If Madrid want to control games, Trent can help them build from deep. He can switch the ball from one side to another, play early passes behind the defence and find attackers before the opposition has time to get organised.

And I would not bench Trent simply because Mourinho wants a defensive system.

He is too talented for that.

Trent has that rare ability to suddenly destroy an opponent’s defensive structure with one pass or one cross. Sometimes, one perfect ball is enough to completely change the game.

So for me, it depends on which version of Mourinho we get.

If Mourinho wants a more physical, direct and balanced team, I would slightly lean towards Dumfries.

But if he wants Madrid to control more of the game and build attacks through possession, I would take Trent.

And honestly, Trent’s all-time level passing gives him a very strong argument. He is the kind of player who can give Mourinho a completely different attacking weapon.

You can build a system around structure. But when you have a player who can create something from nothing, you find a way to use him.
